DVAR TORAH
When you feel joy for what you have you will be free from envying what anyone else has.
In Pharaoh's prophetic dream:
"AND BEHOLD FROM THE NILE ROSE UP SEVEN COWS, WHICH LOOKED GOOD AND HEALTHY OF FLESH AND THEY GRAZED IN THE PASTURE." (Braishis 41:2)
Rashi comments that the cows looking good was a sign of the years of plenty. When the economy is flourishing people look at one another with good eyes and are not envious of each other.
The idea that Rashi expresses is important for happiness in life. When you allow what someone else has to rob you of your own happiness, you will lead a life of suffering. However, appreciating what you have to its fullest will enable you to be filled with good feelings and what someone else has will not disturb you. The more you zero in on the wonderful things that are happening in your life the less it makes a difference if your neighbor has more than you. When you master this attribute of feeling joy for what you have, your whole life is a life of plenty.
Lights of Chanukah resemble that joy and tranquil feeling every Jew must experience during the holiday. As the family unites around the Menorah, we are reminded of the destruction the Yevanim tried to bring upon us. We understand the miracles that Hashem performed for us and we are very thankful for these miracles. However, we would be remised if we only thanked Hashem for the past miracles and forgot the miracles of the present. So, on Chanukah Hashem reminds us to thank him for the present miracles as well.
On Chanukah Hashem turns on the light for us and says my beautiful children look at what I gave each one of you. I have given you talents, family, home, health, and wealth. It’s time you rejoice with all those wonderful gifts. The lights are on to look at and appreciate.
Look around at our community at our synagogue and be proud. You are a part of lively and vibrant community. Your part of a synagogue that has over 100 children. Stop for a moment and say Baruch Hashem.
On the last day of Chanukah, we have eight burning candles. Hashem understands that we have hectic lives and we may forget to appreciate all the gifts. Therefore, we end Chanukah with eight reminders to stop, look, and appreciate.
Wishing everyone a Fralach Chanukah and a Shabbat Shalom From the Perelson Mishpacha
